Atmosphere is composed of variability in a wide range of spatiotemporal scales and they interact with one another. As an example, the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) can influence the frequency and characteristics of individual cumulus clouds, while these individual clouds are what compose the large-scale area of convective activity associated with the MJO. At the same time, some studies suggest that the MJO can influence the onset of El Nino.
These interactions between multiple scales are important for understanding the complete system of the atmosphere. My research interests include to examine the interactions of different scales such as between the diurnal cycle and the MJO and between the synoptic storm systems and planetary scale circulation.
